A Simple Guide for Consumers

When you buy “organic” food, what does it really mean?
Today, many products are marketed as organic—but without clear standards, it becomes difficult to trust what you are buying. At Organica Pakistan, we believe organic food is not just about avoiding chemicals—it is about how food is grown, handled, and brought to your plate.
Here is a simple checklist to help you understand what truly organic food must meet:
1. Crop Production Standards
a. Soil Health (central pillar)
- Build living soil (compost, manure, crop residues)
- Avoid soil degradation (no burning, no erosion)
- Encourage soil biodiversity (microbes, fungi, earthworms)
- All composts and manures must be prepared from materials free from synthetic pesticides, chemical residues, hormones, and other contaminants
b. Inputs (what is allowed / not allowed)
Prohibited:
- Synthetic fertilizers (urea, DAP, etc.)
- Chemical pesticides & herbicides (glyphosate, paraquat, etc.)
- GMOs (genetically modified seeds)
Allowed:
- Compost, farmyard manure (only if derived from pesticide-, hormone-, and chemical-free materials)
- Biofertilizers, microbial inputs
- Botanical extracts (neem, etc.)
c. Seeds & Planting Material
- Prefer local, indigenous, open-pollinated seeds
- No GM seeds
- Avoid chemically treated seeds
d. Pest & Disease Management
Preventive ecological methods:
- Crop diversity / intercropping
- Companion planting
- Habitat for beneficial insects
- Biological and botanical controls preferred
- Chemicals strictly prohibited
e. Weed Management
- No herbicides
- Use mulching, manual weeding, and crop competition
2. Livestock Standards
- Animals raised in natural, humane conditions
- Organic feed (free from synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and growth enhancers)
- No routine antibiotics or growth hormones
- Access to open space / grazing
- Emphasis on animal welfare and ecological integration
3. Processing & Handling Standards
- Avoid contamination with non-organic products
- No artificial preservatives, colors, or additives
- Maintain traceability from farm to consumer
- Clean, safe storage and transport
Why This Matters
Organic food is not just about what is absent (no chemicals). It is about what is present:
- Real taste and freshness
- Higher nutritional value
- Clean, safe ingredients
- Food your body can trust
When these standards are followed, food becomes:
- More nutritious for your body
- More flavorful and satisfying
- Free from harmful residues
- Safer for children and families
What This Means for You
As a consumer, you are not just buying food—you are choosing what goes into your body every day.
When you choose truly organic food, you are choosing:
- Healthier meals for your family
- Clean, safe food you can trust
- Better taste without hidden chemicals
- A safer environment for today and future generations
