Lavender Spiga Vera is a perennial aromatic herb that bears blue flowers. Temperature between 15 and 20 C is crucial for robust growth and the production of the coveted blooms and essential oils.
Sow lavender seeds in in neutral or slightly alkaline, well-drained soil, 2-3 seeds per hole about 2″ apart. As they need light to germinate, drop the seeds on top of the soil and leave them there. They can take 2-4 weeks or more to sprout. So be patient! Once the seeds have sprouted, giving them lots of light and nutrients is essential. Thin seedlings at 12-18″ spacing.
In soggy, damp or poorly drained soil, lavender’s delicate roots will likely rot. So, keep topsoil relatively dry to prevent humidity/fungus-related problems. Lavender prefers nutrient-poor soil, so paying much attention to fertilizing it is unnecessary. Too much fertilizer can stunt their growth and cause other problems. It gains a height of 24 inches and matures in 85 days.
Vera lavender is very fragrant and can be used in tea making, baking and oil production. Lavender will flower the second year and provide an abundance of flowers with a deep violet hue. Flowers form on stalks 5-7 inches long allowing for cut flowers too. Attracts honeybees and other essential pollinators to the garden. It also looks great in containers!
